New Column: Ode to Joy

Hey all. It's been another busy, hectic, no-posts-between-columns week, and I don't see that letting up for most of October, unfortunately. But I will try! Anyway, this week at tm3am.com, I took a look at Phish's reunion album Joy, and found it to be the most fun, alive-sounding record they've made this decade.

But wait, there's more! I also lit into Mike Doughty's depressingly lame Sad Man Happy Man, and the Elms' further adventures in Americana, The Great American Midrange. And I explained why Imogen Heap's Ellipse is one of my favorite albums of the year. Now how much would you pay?

Click on over to read all about it, then come back here and leave me a comment.

  1. Sorry you didn't like The Elms new album. I love it, but I guess if you really are wanting them to sound exactly how they sounded in 2002 you will be disappointed. One correction: "Long Road" is a misprint on the packaging - it's actually called "Long Gone" and has nothing to do with a road being...long...so no shallow well there.

I've liked what I heard from Imogen Heap's new one and I am going to be getting that one soon. Good review by the way.

  2. You're right, Phill. I'll take that out of the column. It's not that I want them to sound like they did in 2002, it's that I think this new path doesn't suit them as well. If they hit upon something entirely different that sounds like neither of their phases, and it works for them, I will be happy. But this Americana rock thing isn't, to my ears, working.

  3. Fair enough. I do know they have made quite a switch from their '02 album, but I think the changes they have made have worked. I hold all three of their most recent releases in high regard.

By the way, you and your job situation are in my prayers. Keep up the good work. Even when I don't agree with you I still find your reviews to be worthwhile.
